In 1957, in a lecture at Brandeis University, the distinguished composer, conductor, educator and author Gunther Schuller coined the term Third Stream to define a genre of music that combined the elements of classical music and jazz, specifically jazz improvisation. The MWE is honored to welcome the Pulitzer- and Grammy-winning octogenarian as guest conductor for a concert that boldly wades into the “stream” with performances of Schuller’s Symphony for Brass and Percussion, op. 16; On Winged Flight: Divertimento for Wind Band; and Blue Dawn into White Heat.
