The Meadows Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jon Lee, presents an exciting concert of classic and new works, including the world premiere of Whispered Interiors by Meadows alumnus and faculty member Dr. Lane Harder. The piece is an atmospheric, meditative setting of a Wallace Stevens poem, featuring percussion quartet, piano quintet, organ, harp and narrator. The mood shifts with John Mackey’s Mass, a driving, intense work and surefire crowd-pleaser. Also on the program is Edgard Varese’s landmark Ionisation (1929), the first piece of western music written for unpitched instruments, and The Manes Scroll by UNT percussion professor Christopher Deane, which uses mallet percussion instruments in unexpected and unique ways. Other featured works include Double Music by John Cage/Lou Harrison, Girlfriends Medley by Bob Becker with Meadows graduate student Daniel Medina as xylophone soloist, Sculpture in Wood by Rüdiger Pawassar, and a new hand-drumming piece by internationally known hand drummer and Meadows faculty member Jamal Mohamed.
