Hawn Gallery Exhibit: “Collective Practice: Community Building Through Zines”

An Opening Reception will be held in the gallery on Friday, October 20th, 5-7pm, wherein the artists will speak about their work.

Collective Practice: Community Building Through Zines features works by Puro Chingón Collective, with members James Huizar, Claudia Aparicio-Gamundi and Claudia Zapata. The works on display include prints, short films, designer toys and zines from the Collective’s own publication, ChingoZine. Zines are similar to magazines, but rather than ones seen on newsstands, they are noncommercial, often homemade or digitally created. They specialize in unconventional subject matter that reflects the subcultures or communities the creators belong to. The Collective created ChingoZine to act as an alternative space for Latinx artists to showcase their work. The booklet format zines use acts as a social equalizer, enabling anyone to publish work otherwise rejected by galleries or publishing houses. It is also an inexpensive medium, allowing individuals to print and distribute zines at little to no cost and reach a wide audience. The Collective’s works seek to do just that. The exhibition’s inclusion of the Collective’s zines and visual art helps illustrate how the use of text and images act as a means to support, represent and empower diverse groups.

Hours: Mon. - Thurs.: 8 a.m. – 9 p.m.;
Fri.: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.;
Sat.: 12 - 5 p.m.;
