Meadows Symphony Orchestra: Vaughan Williams, Schubert and Sibelius

The MSO season opening concert features three uplifting works. The first is Ralph Vaughan Williams’ lovely Five Variants of “Dives and Lazarus,” based on the British folk tune “Dives and Lazarus” and commissioned for the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. It’s followed by Franz Schubert’s buoyant, optimistic Symphony No. 5; written in 1816 when the composer was just 19, it’s considered an homage to Mozart and Haydn. Rounding out the program is Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5, inspired by swans in flight. Premiered in 1915, it has remained one of the composer’s most popular works and is known for its transcendent finale.
