Meadows Opera Theatre: Our Town by Ned Rorem and J. D. McClatchy

Based on the play by Thornton Wilder
With the Meadows Opera Orchestra
Directed by Hank Hammett
Conducted by Paul Phillips

Sing out, Grover’s Corners! They said it couldn’t be done. Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland wanted to try, but were turned down. Finally, in 2005 the Thornton Wilder Foundation asked revered American composer Ned Rorem and poet J. D. McClatchy to bring Wilder’s 1938 Pulitzer Prize-winning landmark drama to the lyric stage for the first time. Rooted in the great traditions of American music, this strong yet delicate contemporary adaptation intimately examines the transient and bittersweet nature of memory and mortality with humor, wit, poignancy and exceptionally powerful storytelling.
