Meadows Museum Exhibit: “Zurbarán: Jacob and His Twelve Sons,” Paintings from Auckland Castle

Auckland Castle in northern England has been home for more than 250 years to Francisco de Zurbarán’s Jacob and His Twelve Sons, a series of 13 life-size paintings depicting the Hebrew patriarch and each of his 12 sons – the individuals who would become the founders of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Zurbarán (1598-1664) created the works during the 1640s, at the height of his artistic maturity, and they are considered one of his most important and monumental series. The paintings are making their first-ever visit to America for this exhibition at the Meadows Museum, after which they will be shown at The Frick Collection in New York, their only other venue before returning to England.

This exhibition has been co-organized by the Meadows Museum, SMU; The Frick Collection; and Auckland Castle, in association with the Kimbell Art Museum. A generous gift from The Meadows Foundation has helped make this exhibition and technical study possible. The exhibition catalogue has been underwritten by the Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica and the Center for Spain in America.
