Book Signing: American Film Musicals by Professor Sean Griffin

Sean Griffin, professor of film & media arts, will sign copies of his new book, Free and Easy? A Defining History of the American Film Musical Genre at the SMU bookstore. The book narrates the evolution of the film musical genre, discussing its influences and how it has come to be defined. It surveys centuries of music history from the music and dance of Native Americans to contemporary music performance in streaming media. Dr. Griffin teaches courses on the history of animation and on musicals – and often sings to his classes! He is the author of Tinker Belles and Evil Queens: The Walt Disney Company from the Inside Out, examining the relationships between Disney and lesbian/gay/queer culture, and co-author of America on Film: Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality at the Movies and Queer Images: A History of Lesbian and Gay Film in America. He has also edited several anthologies, including What Dreams Were Made of: Movie Stars of the 1940s (2011), and contributed a number of articles on the musical genre, soap operas and Disney to journals and other anthologies.
