Faculty member Drew Lang presents a percussion recital with pieces and instruments that audiences might not expect to see, incorporating unusual solo instruments, electronics and a rock band, Scarlet Vermillion. Lang will be joined by fellow band members (and Meadows music alumni) Norman Stone and Eric Forman for instrumentals by King Crimson and Rush.

Alvin Zhu: Guest Piano Recital

Alvin Zhu, pianist and Young Steinway Artist, performs Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and other piano masterworks. Zhu is recognized internationally for his musical talent and versatility. Continuing the legacy of his grandfather, the Chinese piano master Gongyi Zhu, Alvin has had acclaimed performances throughout the United States, Italy, France, China and Australia and has appeared in Alice Tully Hall and Steinway Hall in New York, the Sydney Opera House and Beijing Concert Hall. Alvin performs at SMU as the 2017 winner of the Patrick Price International Piano Competition.

Meadows Distinguished Performer Concert Series - Joaquín Achucarro: Piano Recital

The Distinguished Performer Concert Series at SMU Meadows School of the Arts opens its 2017-18 season with a rare solo recital by world-renowned concert pianist, recording artist and Joel Estes Tate Professor Joaquín Achúcarro. The concert will be held Friday, September 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Caruth Auditorium, 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the SMU campus. Admission is $14 for adults, $11 for seniors, and $8 for SMU students, faculty and staff.

Lenten Organ Recital Series

The SMU Meadows organ department is partnering with Highland Park United Methodist Church to present three lunchtime concerts featuring the church’s impressive Dobson pipe organ. These free, 30-minute recitals will showcase music for the Lent and Easter season in an informal setting. SMU organ students who will perform include Katie Minion (March 8), Joshua Zentner-Barrett (March 22) and Richard Gray (April 5).

Brian Hsu, Guest Piano Recital

Since his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra as a teenager, Brian Hsu has gone on to establish himself as a pianist of great energy and unusual communicative ability. He has won awards in numerous competitions, both in the U.S. and Asia, including the Wideman Competition and the Corpus Christi International Young Artists’ Competition.
