Hawn Gallery Exhibit: “Collective Practice: Community Building Through Zines” - Opening Reception

When:
Friday, October 20, 2017 - 5:00pm - 7:00pm

The Hawn Gallery presents Collective Practice: Community Building Through Zines, works by Puro Chingón Collective, comprised of James Huizar, Claudia Zapata and Claudia Aparicio-Gamundi. The works on display include prints, short films, and zines largely from the collective’s own publication, ChingoZine. Zines are similar to magazines, but rather than ones seen on newsstands, they are noncommercial, often homemade or digitally created. They specialize in unconventional subject matter that reflects the subcultures or communities the creators belong to.

Pollock Gallery Exhibit: “Wide Open” - Opening reception

When:
Friday, November 3, 2017 - 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Since the late 1800s, Dallas has imagined itself as the center of economic trade, equidistant to major ports and hubs throughout the United States. The Port of Dallas, a vision for an inland port stretching from Dallas to Houston via the Trinity River, was a topic of conversation for over 125 years. The massive engineering feat of rerouting the river around Dallas’ city center was embraced by Dallas visionaries regardless of its environmental effects on the community and ecosystem.

Pollock Gallery Exhibit: “Acts of Aggression: An Exhibition About Community” - Opening Reception

When:
Saturday, September 9, 2017 - 2:00pm - 5:00pm

With objects, images, texts and social projects by 12 contemporary artists from Guatemala, Acts of Aggression considers the many ways we construct and process experiences of community, especially within dystopic day-to-day realities. From affective processes of remembrance, solitude, play, misunderstanding, collaboration and care, we experience myriad forms of encounter in our interactions with others. Through these shifting points of contact, connection and disconnection, we outline the (ever-changing) parameters of our communities and define our own situations within them.
