Meadows Percussion Ensemble Spring Concert

The Meadows Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jon D. Lee, presents its spring concert of new and classic works for percussion that run the gamut from light and fun to aggressive and intense. The program will feature a seminal work from the original “bad boy” of Western music, Ballet Mécanique by George Antheil. The “ballet” was originally conceived in 1924 to accompany a film by the same name and was scored for 16 specially synchronized player pianos, two grand pianos, electronic bells, xylophones, bass drums, a siren and three airplane propellers.

Duo Scordatura and SYZYGY: The Commissioned Project

Duo Scordatura, a string duo comprised of Meadows master’s conducting student Nicholas Leh Baker (violin) and Faith Magdalene Jones (viola), and members of SYZYGY, the Meadows School’s contemporary music ensemble, present an evening of commissioned works for piano trio as well as works inspired by the paintings of Dallas-based artist Jennifer Ayyad, who will present her works at the concert. The concert will feature music by Nick Norton, SMU master’s composition student Alex Shawver and others.

Dallas Bach Society: Repertorio

Award-winning Soprano Nell Snaidas and the Baroque Guitar and Lute and Chamber Ensemble will present masterpieces from the Baroque and Renaissance periods in the unique setting of the Gene and Jerry Jones Great Hall, where audience members will be surrounded by masterworks from the Museum's collection. Seating is limited, advance ticket purchase required. This special concert is made possible through collaboration with the Dallas Bach Society.

Meadows Wind Ensemble: The Ink’s Still Wet…

The Ink’s Still Wet… celebrates all those who create – composers, painters, poets, choreographers and more – and will feature world premieres by Meadows composers Kevin Hanlon and Derrick Horne. Hanlon’s For Ross was composed for the MWE and is dedicated to the memory of longtime Meadows professor and clarinetist Ross Powell. The work is scored, appropriately, for six clarinets!

A Different Breath

“Truly to sing – that is a different breath.” The ensembles of the SMU Choral Department turn to the words of Rainer Maria Rilke for the inspiration for the final concert of the season – a celebration of the joyous art of song. Please join the Meadows Concert Choir, Meadows Chorale, and Diva Dolce for this beautiful springtime performance.

Meadows World Music Ensemble

When: 
Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Hot drumming and imaginative improvisation are a hallmark of the Meadows World Music Ensemble. Directed by Jamal Mohamed, the group performs on a variety of exotic percussion instruments from Africa, Asia and the Middle East as well as traditional Western instruments such as vibraphone, keyboards and guitars. The concert will feature traditional works from cultures around the world as well as original compositions.
