SYZYGY Spring Concert: Premieres

A retrospective of seven of the signature works of renowned jazz choreographer Danny Buraczeski, who is retiring from the Meadows dance faculty after 13 years of extraordinary teaching. He was recently recognized as the Meadows Foundation Distinguished Teaching Professor of the Year. Buraczeski’s choreography has traced a clear and deep investigation of jazz - its sources and ongoing evolution - with keen attention paid to the rich lineage of individual performers and movement makers.

Meadows at the Meyerson 2018

The 25th annual benefit concert for SMU Meadows will feature the critically acclaimed Meadows Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Paul Phillips, in the presentation of three works. Opening the program is Samuel Barber’s short, dramatic Essay No. 1 for Orchestra, followed by his Toccata Festiva for Organ and Orchestra, an exuberant, celebratory work composed in 1960 for the inauguration of a new organ at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia.

Ligeti and His World is a three-part series, curated by Lucille Chung, that explores the eclectic music and influences of the brilliant Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006), whose genre-defying, revolutionary works became famous through the films of Stanley Kubrick.

Meadows Symphony Orchestra: Koch, Kancheli, Dvorak and Janacek

The concert opens with two short contemporary works: Danish composer Jesper Koch’s 1997 tone poem Alice under Skies, inspired by Alice in Wonderland, and Giya Kancheli’s Nu.Mu.Zu (2015), which expresses the composer’s hopes for a world without violence. Dvorak’s elegant Romance for Violin follows, with featured soloist Diane Kitzman, faculty member and principal first violin of the Dallas Symphony. The program concludes with Leos Janacek’s expressive, festive Sinfonietta, a 1926 work that begins and ends with fanfares for brass instruments.
