SYZYGY, the contemporary music ensemble of SMU, presents an evening of spectralist music from France, Italy and the United States, including music by Gerard Grisey, Giacinto Sclesi and Philip Lasser, as well as SMU music composition alumni Michael van der Sloot and Brandon Carson. Stylistically diverse, this is music with an emphasis on musical color deriving from naturally occurring acoustic properties of sound.

Meadows Distinguished Performer Concert Series: Brahms Among Friends

Violinist Emanuel Borok, distinguished artist-in-residence and retired concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony, and pianist Mikhail Berestnev, a Performer’s Diploma student of Joaquín Achúcarro at Meadows and award winner at numerous international competitions, will present a concert of music by Brahms and his friends, including composers Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann and Joseph Joachim.

Expanding Your Horizons Concert Series: Chaleepa Ensemble & Alireza Shahmohammadi

The Meadows School’s Expanding Your Horizons series of world music concerts presents the Chaleepa Ensemble, a classical Persian music band based in Dallas. The group includes Bijan Pirjamali on ney (wooden flute); Ehsan Matoori on santur (box zither); Nima Niktab, percussion and vocals; Edris Hosseini on kamanche and tar (stringed instruments) and tombak (goblet drum); and Ehsan Shafiee Zargar on bamtar, setar and shoorangiz (stringed instruments). The group is currently touring Texas and California with noted singer Alireza Shahmohammadi.

Meadows Jazz Orchestra: Swing Dance Concert

Grab your fedoras and dancing shoes and join the SMU Meadows Jazz Orchestra for its third annual swing dance concert. Re-live the classic era of the famous big bands and spend an evening dancing to the music of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and other legendary artists of the 1930s and ’40s. Not sure how to dance? An introductory/brush-up swing dance lesson will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Meadows Wind Ensemble: MWE Plays the Classics

The Classics program has become a popular MWE tradition, a favorite of audiences and ensemble members alike. This year’s program will feature works by two British composers: Hammersmith: Prelude and Scherzo, Op. 52 by Gustav Holst and Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra by Malcolm Arnold, featuring Meadows alumnus Chuck Allred as soloist. The program will also include works by Aaron Copland, Vincent Persichetti and Igor Stravinsky.

Michael Kirkendoll: Piano Works by Frederic Rzewski

Called “the very model of a 21st-century musician,” pianist Michael Kirkendoll has established himself at the forefront of contemporary pianism. A piano professor at the University of Kansas, he is a dedicated advocate for the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, and his performances have been heralded as “inspired,” showcasing “extraordinary” technical gifts and “superior intelligence.” Dr. Kirkendoll will perform works by the brilliant composer Frederic Rzewski (b. 1938).

SYZYGY: 24HC

Music so new it was written last night! Meadows’ contemporary music ensemble SYZYGY, directed by Lane Harder, presents 24HC in partnership with the Meadows music composition department. 24HC stands for “24-hour concert,” meaning that composers will write music for randomly selected players from within SYZYGY between 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m., the performers will rehearse the work from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Come have fun at what is sure to be an entertaining evening of diverse approaches to contemporary music from SMU’s student composers.

American Melodies
