Meadows Wind Ensemble: Firecracker!

The MWE will conclude its 2017-18 concert season with fireworks in the form of Michael Daugherty’s Firecracker! for oboe and chamber orchestra, featuring Meadows oboist Abigail Hawthorne; the original setting of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring; and (assuming Firecracker! doesn’t frighten away the birds!) Olivier Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques, featuring Meadows faculty pianist Liudmila Georgievskaya.

Meadows Wind Ensemble: Showtime!

This can’t-miss program will feature music composed for stage and screen, and will include a guest appearance by multiple Tony Award-winning music director/conductor and Meadows alumna Kimberly Grigsby. Ms. Grigsby will conduct the world premiere of an arrangement by Dean Boras of pieces from shows that she has opened and directed. The program will also include Joseph Thalken’s Baby Face Nelson and the Femme Fatale, and other works composed for stage and screen.

Meadows Wind Ensemble: A Night in Buenos Aires: A Celebration of Tango

The MWE will reprise a sold-out, standing-room-only program from the 2012-13 concert season, A Night in Buenos Aires: A Celebration of Tango, featuring music by Astor Piazzolla (of course!), Igor Stravinsky, Frank Zappa, Michael Daugherty, John Mackey and John Philip Sousa – yes, Sousa really did write a tango! And since no tango program would be complete without dancers, this can’t-miss MWE program will be no exception!

Meadows Wind Ensemble: MWE Plays the Classics

The Classics program has become a popular MWE tradition, a favorite of audiences and ensemble members alike. This year’s program will feature works by two British composers: Hammersmith: Prelude and Scherzo, Op. 52 by Gustav Holst and Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra by Malcolm Arnold, featuring Meadows alumnus Chuck Allred as soloist. The program will also include works by Aaron Copland, Vincent Persichetti and Igor Stravinsky.

Meadows Wind Ensemble: Opening Night in the Dallas Arts District

The MWE opens its 2017-18 concert season with a festive performance at the Dallas City Performance Hall in the Dallas Arts District. The program will feature The Dallas Arts District Fanfare by Dallas composer Quinn Mason, Alvin Etler’s dynamic Concerto for Clarinet, featuring Daniel Goldman of the Dallas Opera Orchestra, and Arnold Schoenberg’s iconic Theme and Variations, Op. 43a.

Meadows Wind Ensemble: The Ink’s Still Wet…

The Ink’s Still Wet… celebrates all those who create – composers, painters, poets, choreographers and more – and will feature world premieres by Meadows composers Kevin Hanlon and Derrick Horne. Hanlon’s For Ross was composed for the MWE and is dedicated to the memory of longtime Meadows professor and clarinetist Ross Powell. The work is scored, appropriately, for six clarinets!

The MWE celebrates our city’s transformation with Cityscapes, a program featuring Dallas Symphony Pops conductor Jeff Tyzik’s composition Cityscapes for Brass Quintet and Wind Ensemble.

Meadows Wind Ensemble: An Eclectic Mix

An Eclectic Mix represents the perfect musical mismatch, a plaid-on-plaid combination of styles and composers! The program will feature String Theory Manouche, a gypsy jazz ensemble led by local banjo and guitar virtuoso Kim Platko, a longtime friend of the MWE. The ensemble also welcomes Tony Award-winning music director and conductor Kimberly Grigsby (’91), who will return to Meadows to conduct a medley of Broadway tunes.
