SYZYGY: Music for 18 Musicians

SYZYGY, the contemporary music ensemble of SMU, in partnership with the Meadows Percussion Ensemble, presents Steve Reich’s large chamber work Music for 18 Musicians for pianos, keyboard percussion, winds, strings and vocalists. With hypnotic pulsing and ever-changing shades of consonant harmony, this work is considered a high-water mark in traditional minimalist composition.

Meadows Percussion Ensemble

The Meadows Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jon D. Lee, presents its fall concert of new and classic works for percussion. The program opens with Christopher Rouse’s brutal Ku-Ka-Ilimoku, a savage, propulsive dance representing the Hawaiian god of war. The program will also include the world premiere of The Elysian Drift, a new work by SMU composition faculty member Lane Harder.

Meadows Percussion Ensemble Spring Concert

The Meadows Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jon D. Lee, presents its spring concert of new and classic works for percussion that run the gamut from light and fun to aggressive and intense. The program will feature a seminal work from the original “bad boy” of Western music, Ballet Mécanique by George Antheil. The “ballet” was originally conceived in 1924 to accompany a film by the same name and was scored for 16 specially synchronized player pianos, two grand pianos, electronic bells, xylophones, bass drums, a siren and three airplane propellers.
