A Celebration of Indonesian Music and Dance

SMU Meadows School of the Arts welcomes guest artists from Indonesia for a concert of music and dance. Performers include Balawan, a singer/songwriter considered Indonesia’s preeminent guitarist, and founder of the Batuan Ethnic Fusion band that combines traditional Balinese music with jazz; Ade Suparman, a Java-based composer and master of the kecapi (box zither), suling (Javanese bamboo flute) and gamelan (indigenous percussion music of Indonesia); and Nurrika, a choreographer and performer of Indonesian classical and folk dances. Also featured will be Indian musician Poovalur Sriji on mridangam (wooden double-headed drum of southern India). The artists will be joined by Jamal Mohamed, director of the Meadows World Music Ensemble, and students from the ensemble.

Senior Dance Concert

Student Rush: Students may line up for free admittance with a valid student I.D. one hour prior to performance time. Students will be admitted to the theatre 5 minutes before show time and may choose seating based on availability.

The annual Senior Dance Concert features works choreographed and produced by seniors in the Division of Dance.

Spring Dance Concert

The Spring Dance Concert will feature three world premieres by internationally acclaimed choreographers. Former Paul Taylor dancer Takehiro Ueyama will create a new work set to John Adams’ The Chairman Dances. Featuring powerful athleticism, as well as delicate gestures drawn from his Japanese heritage, Ueyama’s repertoire has been inspired by the beauty in nature, the duality of darkness and light in the universal human condition and the humanity and compassion in day-to-day living.

Fall Dance Concert: Celebrating Women’s Voices

Three exciting contemporary works, including premieres by Princess Grace Award recipient Bridget L. Moore and by Meadows Artist-in-Residence Brandi Coleman and a re-created work by New York-based choreographer Cherylyn Lavagnino, will be presented at SMU Meadows School of the Arts’ Fall Dance Concert, October 24-28 in the Bob Hope Theatre at SMU. The concert, titled “Celebrating Women’s Voices,” represents the first time Meadows has presented an entire show of works by female choreographers.
