Debate: Should Confederate Memorials in Dallas be Removed?

SMU Debate will host a public debate on a current topic of interest, with team members providing opening and closing speeches while allowing half an hour for audience arguments for and against the evening’s resolution. A final ballot will be taken regarding the audience’s opinion at the end of the hour. The event is one of a series of public debates on controversial issues sponsored by SMU Debate for the campus and Dallas community. Debate: Considering Affirmative Action in College Admissions

SMU Debate will host the debate team from UT-Tyler on the subject of affirmative action in college admissions. Team members will provide opening and closing speeches while allowing half an hour for audience discussion. A final ballot will be taken regarding the audience’s opinion at the end of the hour. The event is one of a series of public debates on controversial issues sponsored by SMU Debate for the campus and Dallas community. Texas Senate Debate Watch Party and Public Debate

Director of Debate Dr. Ben Voth will provide the following events relating to the Ted Cruz/ Beto O'Rourke debate on SMU's campus Friday night:

1. 5 p.m. - Dr. Voth will offer a pre-lecture about the debate and what to expect from the two candidates and the media covering and moderating the event. Dr. Voth publishes extensively on political debates and has published several articles about political debates in academic and general press outlets.

Debate: Politics in Africa

The SMU Debate Program welcomes the iDebate Rwanda team, composed of Rwandan high school students visiting the U.S. as part of their Voices of a Post-Genocide Generation Tour, commemorating the 25th anniversary in 2019 of the Rwandan genocide. The teams will debate political issues in Africa. Each team will provide opening and closing speeches, with time provided for audience arguments for and against the evening’s resolution. A final ballot will be taken regarding the audience’s opinion at the end of the hour.
